The Artist as Nomad theme explores the freedom and challenges of constant movement in an artist’s life, whether through travel or virtual connections. It highlights how mobility brings inspiration from different cultures, but also comes with instability and logistical struggles. For me, it showed the balance between adaptability and resilience, and how the freedom to work from anywhere can be exciting and demanding.

Vik Muniz
Vik Muniz embodies the Artist as Nomad, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures and unconventional materials like garbage and chocolate. His work, Pictures of Garbage, reflects his engagement with different environments and communities. Muniz’s mobility allows him to blend physical materials with conceptual ideas, redefining creativity and showing how movement shapes artistic identity and perspective.
Vik Muniz’s nomadic approach to art taught me how movement, environment, and unexpected materials make creativity. His ability to transform overlooked objects, like garbage, into meaningful art inspired me to rethink the sources I use in my own work. It showed me that adapting to new places and cultures brings fresh perspectives, and creativity often comes from embracing change and diversity.
Student led seminar
In the seminar, we explored the multifaceted nature of being a nomadic artist, focusing on the technical and emotional challenges they encounter. The discussion began with practical obstacles, such as the lack of permanent studio space and the complexities of transporting materials and finished works. I highlighted how many nomadic artists adapt by working with portable mediums, such as digital art or smaller, more manageable pieces.
Additionally, we examined the emotional and psychological strains of a lifestyle defined by movement, particularly the isolation and lack of stable connections it can bring. The group engaged in discussions about how nomadic artists sustain their careers while balancing creative freedom with the challenges of constant change. Through case studies and critical questions, we reflected on how nomadism shapes artistic practices and career development, fostering thoughtful dialogue about the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in such a dynamic lifestyle.

Seminar Workshop
We concluded with a collaborative workshop where students created drawings based on personal items or memories they would carry with them as nomadic artists. The activity allowed them to reflect on the concept of mobility and how it could shape their practice. Students applied the nomadic concept by exploring portable formats and considering the emotional and symbolic value of their chosen objects, connecting their artistic identity to the idea of movement and adaptability. This hands-on exercise highlighted the diversity of approaches to nomadism and encouraged participants to see it as both a challenge and a source of creative inspiration.
Reflection
The Artist as Nomad theme made me reflect on how movement, physical and digital, shapes the way I create. As someone who has moved between countries, cities, and screens, I’ve started to notice how each place and platform leaves a mark on my work. This theme helped me embrace flexibility, impermanence, and the idea that creativity doesn’t need a fixed home. Inspiration can come from a train ride, a messy desktop, a temporary studio, or a late-night scroll. Being a nomadic artist is about staying open to change, adapting to new tools, and carrying ideas with you wherever you go.
